THE CAGE

AN OUTDOOR INSTALLATION

Sylvia Riquezes’s site-specific installation -The Cage-, is set in the outside corridor of the gallery. It consists of a cage made out of chicken wire, wire mesh, PVC balls, and vinyl circles. The piece functions as a trap, and it induces the viewer into a kind of anthological journey.  The spectator walks through this wire-made cage as stepping into a prison.  The narrow hallway seems to be an asphyxiating tunnel where the viewer confronts himself or herself to anthological emotions and lifetime states. New perceptive realities arise and become insights and inner processes of awareness. Linguistic shocks from peculiar words-Hell-Anger-Animality-Boddhitsatva-Heaven-Pleasure-Praise-Prosperity-Decline-Disgrace- are written on the wall or on the floor to provoke inquiry and examination. It is up to the viewer to submerge himself in this sort of experimental cubicle to access personal and private matters. The gist of it is to set out for a spiritual quest.
